For Patients

Patient from Downey Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in Downey, CA looking at her phoneA comfortable, even enjoyable surgical experience begins with education. At Downey Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, we strongly suggest that our newer patients properly prepare for their first appointment. During your initial consultation, we will be able to determine whether or not oral surgery is right for you. Dr. James P. McAndrews, DDS, FACS will then review all of your possible treatment options with you to ensure you make an informed decision.

Prepare for Your Appointment

With so much riding on your treatment and oral health, preparing for your appointment is a necessity. While the best way to learn more is always in person, the following pages can help you better understand our office and services beforehand:

FIRST VISIT / CONSULTATION

Your initial appointment will be a consultation explaining your diagnosis and treatment options. Occasionally, surgery can be performed the same day as the consultation. However, a complex medical history or treatment plan will generally require an evaluation with a second appointment to provide treatment on another day.

Please assist us by providing the following information at the time of your consultation:
•  Your surgical referral slip and any x-rays if applicable.
•  A list of medications you are presently taking.
•  If you have medical or dental insurance, bring the necessary information. This will avoid delays and allow us to help you process claims.

IMPORTANT: All patients under the age of 18 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at the consultation visit.

A complete medical history will be obtained at the consultation visit. Please alert the office if you have a medical condition that may be of concern prior to surgery (i.e. diabetes, high blood pressure, artificial heart valves and joints, etc.) or if you are on any medication (i.e. heart medications, aspirin, anticoagulant therapy, etc.).

X-RAYS

If your dentist or physician has taken x-rays, you may request that they forward them to our office or you may bring them to your consultation. If additional films are necessary, they can be taken at our facility. It is common that additional radiographs will be required at the first visit.

SCHEDULING

At Downey Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, to best serve our patients, we prefer to schedule surgeries in the morning and consultations in the afternoon. We will schedule your appointment as promptly as possible. If you have pain or an emergency situation, please inform us and every effort will be made to see you that day.

Our goal is to stay on schedule to minimize your waiting. Due to the nature of oral and maxillofacial surgery, unforeseen circumstances may lengthen the time allocated for a procedure. Emergencies also must be accommodated and may cause delays. We appreciate your understanding and patience.
